Hydraulic Excavators, and sometime called Crawler Excavators

Excavators are heavy machines used for excavating earth and rocks and loading them on a dump truck. The hydraulic excavator is most commonly used for digging rocks and soil, but with its many attachments. The size ranges from small ones used in civil engineering to super large ones used in mines. Crawler excavators are capable of a wide variety of work by changing a front attachment to cutting steel, breaking concrete, drilling holes in the earth, laying gravel onto roads prior to paving.

Excavators are also used for crushing rocks, steel, and concrete, and also changing and mowing landscapes.

In the past cable excavators were used for earth moving work, today they have been replaced by Hydraulic excavators that accomplish more with much easier and simpler operations and with reduced cost.

Excavators are also commonly referred to as diggers or 360s, for their ability to swivel in a 360-degree motion.

Poclain Hydraulic Excavator, one of the first hydraulic excavators made, it was produced in 1951 by Poclain in France.

Mini excavator, midi excavator, bucket wheel excavator, and backhoe are all different types of excavators.

The loader backhoe is a tractor with a front shovel bucket and a small backhoe located in the rear of the machine.

Other types of excavators include:

• Drag line excavators • Long reach excavators • Power shovels • Skid steer excavators • Steam shovels • Suction excavators

There are several companies that manufacture excavators, Caterpillar, Komatsu, Case, Bobcat, Volvo, New Holland, John Deere, Gehl, Terex, Hitachi, JCB, and many more manufacturers.
